15 tales from the Great Himalaya Trails – #MyGHT in pictures

January 14, 2016

The Great Himalaya Trails Instagram account is less than a year old but we’ve been overwhelmed by the support from fellow travelers, trekkers, adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts who came to Nepal in 2015 and generously shared their experience with us through the official GHT hashtag: #MyGHT.

From challenging trails and stunning sunsets to cultural exchange and incredible personal achievements we’ve watched some pretty amazing journeys unfold.

At the GHT headquarters we send a big heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you who hashtagged #MyGHT on your journeys through Nepal. You really made the GHT’s Instagram account come alive last year.

To honor our talented followers out there we’ve picked 15 of our favorite #MyGHT moments shared in 2015. Sit back, relax and enjoy a pictorial trip along the stunning Great Himalaya Trails.

Oh and P.S. If you are traveling in Nepal this year please share your tales from the trails with us by using our hashtag #MyGHT. We’d love to follow your adventures and share them with our growing community of trail huggers.

Happy Trails in 2016!

1) Best animal encounter

One of our favorite profiles to follow last year was @mchellemarie who shared her challenges and triumphs with us as she made her way along the Great Himalaya Trails from the Far West of Nepal to Kanchenjunga (pictured here) in the east. She had a knack for making friends along the trails too. For more on her journey take a look at her contributing posts on GHT’s Trekker’s Journal

2) Best smile

The GHT had the pleasure of traveling with Mohan Duwal (@mohgraphy) quite a bit last year. From Mustang to Everest and beyond he continues to take our breath away with stunning landscape shots and unique personal portraits. This beautiful smile was captured in Syangboche, in the Khumbu region.

3) Best mountain shot

Our favorite mountain shot last year came from the lens of @jankovoy with this moonlight capture of Dhaulagiri (8,167). Just stunning.

4) Best landscape

We were super excited to have photographer Tyler Metcalfe (@tylermetcalfe) on a trip with the GHT to Mustang working on assignment for @Natgeotravel. His landscape shots, like this one from the village of Samar, and the personal stories he gathered along the way really captured the essence of the GHT.

5) Best Base Camp feat

You’ll never forget that feeling of reaching Everest Base Camp for the first time. @appalachiantrailgirl inspired us with her impressive trekking schedule including both Annapurna Base Camp and Everest Base Camp last fall, all the while capturing her experience on her lovely Instagram account.

6) Best dramatic views

We showed Mustang some proper love last year. We just couldn’t get enough of the ever-changing landscapes, the beautiful colors, the amazing trails and the hospitable people. One of our favorite shots came from @jwattadventure on his trek along the red cliffs of Dakmar, south of Lo Manthang.

7) Best lake shot

Some of our favorite shots from the Everest region came from @estherxling. This image of one of the Gokyo lakes just speaks for itself.

8) Best campsite

@lerako is an incredibly talented Wildlife, Travel and Adventure photographer who shared his journey to Annapurna last year in stunning frames, among them this gorgeous evening shot from Annapurna Base Camp.

9) Best shots from the GHT team

When we’re not busy living vicariously through your adventures we head to the hills ourselves for some fresh air, wider horizons and a healthy dose of click-filter-hashtag-share. First up @z.nehaz’s capture of a nerve-racking ride in Mustang and @maddolling‘s shot from a recent Gosaikunda trek in Langtang National Park.

10) Best action shot

A photo posted by Shikhar (@nepal.travels) on

Probably one of the most daring photographers that the GHT has had the honor of traveling with is Shikhar Bhattarai (@nepal.travels). He was always perilously close to the edge or in the line of fire, all to bag that perfect shot. This picture was taken seconds before nearly getting run over by a Mustang pony and his fearless rider at the Yartung Festival in Lo Manthang.

11) Best die-hard trekker

@shutter_psycho
gives the impression of always being laced up in his trekking boots with camera in hand. Follow his gorgeous journey through the trails of Nepal. This lovely shot is taken from the Annapurna Circuit, near Gangapurna Lake in Manang.

12) Best storyteller

For your dose of stunning Himalayan photographs and interesting anecdotes head over to the account of photo editor and adventurer @jocelynchavy. This beautiful shot features the north face of Mt. Cholatse (6,440m) located in the Khumbu region.

13) Best 2-wheel ride

If you want to know what it’s like to explore the Great Himalaya Trails on two wheels, follow @digital_sniper and his epic mountain bike trip through Mustang.

14) Best thrill

Oh the suspension bridges. To anyone who has had to walk, ride, run, crawl? across one of these. This one is for you. Courtesy of @j_connell1.

15) Best mountain flight shot

We will never tire of the mountain views. Keep them coming! This beautiful ocean-like image of the Himalayan foothills was taken by @brendanmitchell on a mountain flight. We just love it.
